In case you hadn’t realized from all the things I casually mention, our family is slowly making our home into what I’ve now learned is called an “urban homestead”. Everything we’ve started growing here is edible. Everything that isn’t, we’re trying to either get rid of or it serves some other purpose.

For example, I insisted that Mr. Pikko not cut down the ti-leaf plants because it was useful for ropemaking. Sure, it would be a primitive rope and I ain’t gonna go making some right now.

My First Loaf of Bread!

First Loaf of Bread

I know what you’re probably thinking. That is one ugly loaf of bread. But still, it’s my first ever and the whole point of doing this blog is to teach myself how to cook new things.

I’ve always been petrified of baking bread for some reason. I think maybe I’m just intimidated by the word “yeast”. Whenever I see that in a recipe my brain starts to turn around and run away screaming, “NOOOOOOOOO nononono not yeast!” I don’t know why.

Mango Sorbet Mania

It’s been raining mangoes down here at the Pikko household, with this week bringing a particularly heavy set of fruit deciding it was time to plunge down to the ground without waiting for us. We gave away almost 20 manoges on Easter Sunday, but by the time Wednesday rolled around, we had over sixty that we had either picked or picked up from the ground and were partially salvageable. I’d wake up the morning after picking in the afternoon and find five more on the ground. So frustrating!

Jon in particular had a harsh set of goodbyes to give. From his gifting of Needle to his plea to Bran to wake up to Ned’s quivering face as Jon asked about his mother, it was almost too much to bear.

Fondant Figure Easter Cupcakes

The Easter cupcakes are done and I’m very happy to report that they came out just as planned! I was so scared that I was going to have spent hours on the figures only to mess them up when it came to frosting. Aside from the figures I made, I had a nest of eggs to do.

This afternoon, I made two sets of frosting: green buttercream (using Bakerella’s recipe) and chocolate cream cheese frosting (from Cupcake Project).
